Dramane Camara's BAL triumph demonstrates the expansion of basketball in Mali

Posted : 22 May 2023
Regardless of the outcome, the Basketball Africa League semifinal between Al Ahly and Stade Malien on May 24 will be beneficial for Malian basketball.

Dramane Camara, one of Mali's most promising prospects, will play in the BAL championship game if Ahly triumph. Stade Malien's club from Bamako will have a chance to become the most unexpected African champions if they pull off an upset.

Recently, Adama Sanogo's crucial contribution to UConn's victory in the NCAA tournament for men's basketball galvanised the nation. At AfroBasket 2021, the women's national team also won a silver medal.

"I think that in Mali, you've got a lot of talent - a lot of players from Mali who are very, very good," Camara, a 19-year-old said

"Adama Sanogo, who just won the NCAA tournament - I look up to him. I had the chance to talk to him a few years ago and he gave me some advice. It was very interesting to hear from someone who is not too old and not younger than me. Our age is similar... He gave me advice to play hard, to stay focused."

Camara is one of their brightest prospects, however it should be noted that he spent most of his time learning the game in France before enrolling in the NBA Africa Academy in Senegal two years ago.

He didn't participate in the BAL last year because he didn't yet have a Malian passport, but once it was resolved, Ahly selected him in the BAL Elevate Draft this year.
