Declan Rice's potential departure from West Ham, significance of his final game in the Europa Conference League

Posted : 07 June 2023
On their journey from London to Prague via Manchester for the Europa Conference League final, a determined group of young West Ham fans decided to sing just one song.

This particular song is expected to be echoed numerous times before and during the match against Serie A team Fiorentina at Eden Arena on Wednesday.

The outcome of this contest holds great significance for West Ham, as it stands between them and their first substantial trophy since 1980.

This calls to question Declan Rice end or continuation of tenure in the West Ham club. This is mainly due to the strong possibility that the Europa Conference League final will mark Declan Rice's last game for West Ham.

If West Ham manages to defeat Fiorentina, Rice will rightfully join the ranks of these revered individuals.

"It would be my biggest achievement in football so far, 100%," he said in an interview with the West Ham website.

"It would just mean everything, to lift that trophy, especially to be with the lads, wanting to see them smiling again and lift the trophy, to see our families afterward with the trophy.

"It's in our hands. It's a chance to go and create a legacy where every single player, the manager, everyone involved will be remembered forever."

Having been with the club for nine years since joining at the age of 14, following rejection by Chelsea, Rice has amassed an impressive record of 245 appearances, including the upcoming final. His contributions have earned him three club player of the year awards and a season as captain.

Now, Rice is prepared to embrace the numerous offers pouring in from some of the biggest clubs in the sport.

Rice is aware that he has the opportunity to leave West Ham as a hero. Only two individuals have captained the team to victory in a final: the legendary World Cup winner Bobby Moore and the esteemed defender Billy Bonds, whose status as one of the club's finest players is deeply entrenched in its history.
