Danny Welbeck discusses Roberto de Zerbi, Brighton's resurgence, and advice for young players
Posted : 21 July 2023
Welbeck's age becomes a topic of discussion throughout the interview with BBC Sport, and the Brighton forward acknowledges that a football career "goes so quickly." At 32 years old, Welbeck reflects on his debut with Manchester United as a 17-year-old back in 2008. Among Brighton's squad, only Adam Lallana and new arrival James Milner are older than the former England striker.
Despite his age, Welbeck is feeling fit and strong, eagerly looking forward to the upcoming season. He confidently states, "I have done some pre-season tests, and I am up there at the top of them even though quite a few of the squad are younger. You put the graft in, and it is good that it pays off."
Last season, Welbeck made 37 appearances for Brighton, contributing to the team's success as they were praised across English football for their adventurous approach. The Seagulls finished sixth, their highest position in history, securing qualification for Europe for the first time. As a result, they will be heading straight into the group phase of the Europa League in the upcoming season. Additionally, many observers felt they were unlucky not to beat Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final in April.
Manager Roberto de Zerbi isn't allowing the players time to bask in their success. Welbeck emphasizes, "You can't do one good season and think that is enough. It is never enough. That is a lot of what the manager says." De Zerbi's philosophy is to keep pushing forward, constantly seeking improvement. He instills in the team the belief that they can be better.
"There is no resting. We are going to push ourselves and see what we can do in every single competition this year," Welbeck adds, highlighting the team's determination to excel and achieve even greater heights in the coming season.
