Cristiano Ronaldo sent off in Saudi Super Cup semifinal clash

Posted : 09 April 2024

During the Saudi Super Cup semi-final clash between Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal, Cristiano Ronaldo, the forward for Al-Nassr, found himself expelled from the match for elbowing an opponent. The incident occurred in the 86th minute when Ronaldo, aged 39, was observed swinging his elbow twice into the chest of Ali Al Bulayhi from the opposing team, who subsequently fell to the ground.

Following the altercation, Ronaldo was promptly shown a straight red card and left the field. The Portugal international's actions escalated as he seemed to gesture aggressively towards the referee before his departure. This marked Ronaldo's first expulsion since joining Al-Nassr in December 2022, signaling a rare disciplinary issue for the seasoned footballer.

At the time of Ronaldo's dismissal, Al-Nassr was trailing 2-0, with goals from Salem Al-Dawsari and Malcom securing the lead for Al-Hilal. Despite a late effort from former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane, who netted a goal in stoppage time, it wasn't enough to overturn the deficit for Al-Nassr.

With Al-Hilal securing a spot in the final, they are set to face Al-Ittihad. The latter earned their place in the championship match after defeating Al-Wehda 2-1 earlier on Monday. Notable contributions from former Real Madrid captain Karim Benzema and Morocco forward Abderrazak Hamdallah were pivotal in securing the victory for Al-Ittihad, setting the stage for an intriguing final showdown.
