Congo DR captain Chancel Mbemba faces racist abuse after Africa Cup of Nations match against Morocco

Posted : 22 January 2024

Congo DR captain Chancel Mbemba faced a barrage of racist abuse on social media following his team's 1-1 draw against Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations. Numerous users targeted Mbemba's Instagram account with monkey and gorilla emojis, along with racist comments.

The 29-year-old, who plays for Marseille in the French top tier, became the subject of this online abuse after a heated exchange with Morocco coach Walid Regragui post-match, leading to a confrontation between players and officials from both teams.

Mbemba's Instagram account received an influx of racist comments and emojis, a disturbing trend that continues to plague footballers. The targeted abuse occurred after Mbemba had a tense on-field altercation with Morocco coach Regragui.

The exchange escalated into a melee involving players and officials from both teams, extending into the tunnel as they left the field. The incident was sparked when Regragui approached Mbemba during a personal moment of gratitude, leading to a confrontation and Mbemba indicating to the video referee.

Following the match in San Pedro, Mbemba hinted at Regragui's use of insulting language towards him. Expressing his disappointment, Mbemba chose to maintain silence, emphasizing his respect for everyone.

The incident sheds light on the persistent issue of racism in football, both on the field and through online platforms. As of now, there has been no immediate response from Regragui regarding the allegations made by Mbemba.
