Madugu explained that the exclusion was not due to a lack of quality but rather the result of intense competition for limited spots in the team, especially in the attacking department.
“Gift Monday is a talented player and has been performing well in her club. However, the final squad selection was based on current form, tactical needs, and balance across the positions,” Madugu said while addressing media questions on Monday.
The coach acknowledged the difficult nature of the selection process, citing the abundance of quality talent vying for national team places. According to Madugu, no player is automatically guaranteed a place and all selections are based on performance, adaptability, and the team’s overall tactical structure.
“It’s not about where you play, whether abroad or in the NWFL. If you distinguish yourself, you’ll get a chance. Unfortunately, we only have limited spots, and we have to make tough decisions,” he added.
Gift Monday has been in impressive form in the NWSL, with strong performances and a growing reputation. Her omission, alongside other notable names such as Asisat Oshoala and Uchenna Kanu, has raised eyebrows among fans, but Madugu insists that the door remains open for future inclusion.
