Christian Eriksen Hospitalised After Collapsing During Denmark Friendly Against Ukraine

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen was taken to hospital after collapsing during his country's international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, five years after suffering a cardiac arrest during the European Championship.

The 34-year-old fell to the ground in the 64th minute of the match in Odense, prompting immediate concern among players, officials, and spectators. Medical personnel rushed onto the pitch while teammates and opponents formed a protective circle around him to shield the incident from public view.

With Denmark leading 2-1 at the time, the match was abandoned as Eriksen received treatment. He later left the field on foot, assisted and protected by players from both teams before being transported to hospital for further assessment.

The Danish Football Association later confirmed that Eriksen was conscious and in stable condition. Team doctor Morten Boesen reported that the midfielder briefly lost consciousness but recovered quickly and was able to communicate with medical staff shortly afterward.

Boesen explained that Eriksen's implanted cardiac device appeared to function correctly during the incident. He added that further examinations would be carried out to determine the exact cause of the collapse and that the player had asked for his greetings to be passed on to teammates, reassuring them that he was doing well.

The incident inevitably brought back memories of Euro 2020, when Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark's group-stage match against Finland. Following that medical emergency, he underwent treatment and was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), a device designed to monitor and regulate heart rhythms.

Despite the life-threatening episode, Eriksen returned to professional football seven months later with Brentford before moving to Manchester United, where he won both the FA Cup and League Cup. He currently plays for VfL Wolfsburg in Germany and remains a key figure in Danish football.

Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg praised the swift response from medical personnel and those on the pitch. He recalled seeing Eriksen suddenly collapse and highlighted the professionalism and respect shown by everyone involved during the emergency.

Head coach Brian Riemer described the incident as deeply distressing for players, staff, and opponents alike. Having previously worked closely with Eriksen at Brentford, Riemer admitted the situation was particularly emotional given their personal connection.

Former Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner also expressed relief that Eriksen was conscious and able to leave the field under his own power, while acknowledging the distressing nature of seeing such an incident occur again.

Although Denmark will not participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America, the football community will now be focused on Eriksen's recovery as doctors continue to evaluate the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
