Chelsea's signings of Willian, Eto'o under investigation by Premier League

Posted : 31 October 2023
Chelsea's signings of Willian and Samuel Eto'o in 2013 are under investigation by the Premier League as part of a probe into possible financial regulation breaches, according to sources. The investigation was initiated when Chelsea's new owners, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, reported several transactions to the game's governing bodies during their takeover last May.

UEFA already fined Chelsea €10 million in July for incomplete financial information regarding deals from 2012 to 2019. The Premier League's investigation is ongoing, and it has been confirmed that the signings of Willian and Eto'o are part of the inquiry.

Willian joined Chelsea a decade ago in a last-minute deal after he was on the verge of signing with Tottenham. During the same summer transfer window, Eto'o arrived on a one-year contract. Both players came from the Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala. Willian currently plays for Fulham, while Eto'o retired in 2019.

Chelsea's former owner, Roman Abramovich, who purchased the club in 2003, was compelled to sell Chelsea in 2022 after facing sanctions from the UK government over alleged ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Chelsea issued a statement addressing the allegations, noting that they predate the club's current ownership, involve entities supposedly controlled by the club's previous owner, and do not relate to anyone presently associated with the club.

The club's ownership group reported the financial irregularities to football regulators during the due diligence process leading up to their purchase of Chelsea in May 2022, and they continue to cooperate with the investigations.
