Chelsea have reported the largest pre-tax loss in Premier League history, posting a £262 million deficit for the 2024-25 season. This surpasses the previous record of £179.5 million set by Manchester City in 2011.
The massive loss comes despite Chelsea generating £490.9 million in revenue, their second-highest total ever. During the season, the Blues won the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup, and finished fourth in the Premier League.
The club has confirmed it remains compliant with financial regulations, including the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which allow losses of up to £105 million over a three-year period. The figures used to calculate compliance differ from the reported pre-tax loss.
Since BlueCo took over in 2022, Chelsea has spent more than £1 billion on player transfers, focusing on younger players with long-term contracts. UEFA fined the club £26.7 million for breaching squad-cost ratio rules and continues to monitor Chelsea over a three-year period.
Sources indicated that the reported losses include various fines, such as a £10.75 million Premier League sanction related to agent payments under former owner Roman Abramovich. The losses also account for write-offs of high-profile players, including Raheem Sterling, who was released, and Mykhailo Mudryk, currently under investigation for a failed drugs test.
Chelsea expect their next accounts to show record income, boosted by £85 million from winning the Club World Cup and approximately £80 million in Champions League television revenue. The reported £262 million loss is lower than the £355 million figure cited in UEFA’s recent benchmarking report, which excluded transfers between clubs within the same ownership group, including French side Strasbourg.
The club also revealed that its women’s team recorded a £17.1 million loss for 2024-25, with revenue totaling £21.3 million.
