Chelsea Launches Disciplinary Action Against Enzo Fernandez Over Controversial Video

Chelsea has initiated disciplinary proceedings against midfielder Enzo Fernandez following his posting of a video that the French Football Federation (FFF) described as containing an alleged "racist and discriminatory" chant. The FFF announced on Tuesday that it would be filing a complaint with FIFA regarding the video, which features a song sung by members of the Argentina squad about French players.

 

Fernandez's teammate, Wesley Fofana, who has one cap for France, shared an image of the video on Instagram, labeling it as "uninhibited racism." In response, Fernandez expressed deep regret for his actions, apologizing for the video posted during Argentina's Copa America celebrations. He acknowledged the offensive nature of the song and emphasized that the words used do not reflect his beliefs or character.

 

In a statement, Chelsea expressed appreciation for Fernandez's public apology and indicated that the club would use the situation as an opportunity for education. They confirmed the initiation of an internal disciplinary procedure in light of the incident. The FFF has also reached out to the Argentine Football Association regarding the live video posted by Fernandez after Argentina's victory over Colombia in the Copa America final.

 

FFF President Philippe Diallo condemned the remarks in the video as "unacceptable and discriminatory," and he plans to appeal directly to his Argentine counterpart while involving FIFA in the legal complaint. FIFA has acknowledged awareness of the video and is investigating the incident, reiterating its strong stance against any form of discrimination within the sport.

 

Chelsea, with a diverse first-team squad that includes seven players of black or mixed race, maintains that all forms of discriminatory behavior are entirely unacceptable and prides itself on being an inclusive club that welcomes individuals from all backgrounds.
