Chelsea: Club must "stop and put a strategy in place" - Thiago Silva

Posted : 21 April 2023
Thiago Silva, a defender for Chelsea, argues that the team must "stop and put a strategy in place" or risk having another challenging season the next year.

Chelsea is 11th in the Premier League and will finish this season without a trophy after losing to Real Madrid in the Champions League, despite extravagant transfer expenditure under new owner Todd Boehly.

"The manager can only pick 11 from 30-something. That's tough," said Silva.
"There is always going to be someone upset because not everyone can play.

"We had to increase the size of the changing rooms because it didn't fit the size of the team," Silva revealed.

In May 2022, private equity company Clearlake Capital and American investor Boehly completed the £4.25 billion purchase of Chelsea.

They acquired a first-team roster of 30 players for roughly £550 million over the course of the summer and winter transfer windows, but this has not resulted in success on the field.

This season, Chelsea has fired managers Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, and interim manager Frank Lampard has lost all four games since taking over this month for a second time.

For for the second time in 25 seasons, they are unlikely to qualify for Europe.

"It's a difficult moment for the club, with a lot of indecision," added 38-year-old Silva.
"A positive point is that there are amazing players within the squad, but on the other hand there is always players that are going to be unhappy.

"We need to stop and put a strategy in place, otherwise next season we could make the same mistakes."

As part of their hunt for a new manager, Chelsea is said to have spoken with former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann, with Luis Enrique, the former manager of Spain, also being considered.
