What should have been remembered as a thrilling late comeback in the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League instead descended into disorder on Wednesday evening in Ilorin, as the rescheduled Match Day 22 clash between Kwara United FC and Rivers United FC ended in chaos.
The encounter at the Ilorin Township Stadium had all the ingredients of a classic contest before emotions spilled beyond control.
The hosts looked on course for maximum points after striker Mohammed Shamsudeen broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute, finishing off a well-worked attacking move to send the home supporters into celebration.
For much of the second half, Kwara United managed the game effectively, frustrating Rivers United’s attacking efforts. However, deep into stoppage time, Rivers United forward David Sholumade struck in the 90+3 minute to level the scores.
The equaliser immediately sparked protests from the home crowd, with allegations that goalkeeper Suraju Ayeleso had been fouled in the build-up to the goal. Match officials waved away the appeals, and moments later, the final whistle confirmed a dramatic 1–1 draw.
Tensions escalated rapidly after the referee’s decision stood. Sections of the home supporters breached restricted areas of the stadium, confronting match officials and members of the visiting delegation.
Chairs and plastic bottles were reportedly thrown, while attempts were made to physically confront the referees.
The situation further deteriorated when Rivers United’s General Manager, Okey Kpalukwu, was attacked amid the confusion. A short video circulating online showed him with visible facial injuries.
The visiting team and officials were unable to leave the stadium immediately, as supporters reportedly blocked the main exit for over 30 minutes.
Eyewitnesses cited inadequate security presence as a major factor in the escalation. With an estimated crowd of about 5,000 spectators, reports suggest fewer than 20 police officers were deployed to manage the fixture.
Observers believe the limited security personnel were overwhelmed once tensions flared in stoppage time.
There were no confirmed fatalities, though the extent of injuries sustained by match officials and others involved has yet to be officially detailed.
In the aftermath, Kwara United FC released a statement condemning the violence and distancing the club from the actions of the unruly supporters.
The club expressed regret over the incident and extended apologies to Kpalukwu, the Rivers United delegation, match officials, security operatives, and affected spectators.
The Ilorin-based side pledged to identify those responsible and ensure appropriate action is taken, emphasizing that such conduct does not reflect the values of the club.
From a footballing perspective, the encounter delivered late drama and competitive intensity.
However, the aftermath once again highlights the recurring challenge of crowd control and matchday security in domestic league fixtures.
As the NPFL season progresses, stakeholders will be hoping that greater emphasis is placed on preventive security measures to protect players, officials, and supporters, ensuring that the focus remains on the game rather than regrettable off-field incidents.
