Bruno Fernandes becomes Manchester United's permanent captain, no change of strategy
Posted : 23 July 2023
Bruno Fernandes has embraced his role as Manchester United's permanent captain and has no intention of changing his approach despite criticism in the past. He led the team for the first time in their pre-season victory over Arsenal, taking over the captaincy from Harry Maguire.
Former United captain Gary Neville had criticized Fernandes for his behavior during the 7-0 defeat by Liverpool in March. However, the Portuguese midfielder believes that his discipline and passion are valued by the manager, and he will continue to be his natural self on and off the pitch.
Fernandes had also received support from his former Ajax coach, Erik ten Hag, who excused his petulant behavior. The midfielder is grateful for Ten Hag's support and remains committed to giving his best for the team.
Regarding his appointment as captain, Fernandes stated that he had no prior knowledge of the decision and was surprised when the manager announced it to the team. Nonetheless, he is honored to take on the role and feels that Manchester United, as a historic club, must fight for every trophy and title.
Fernandes acknowledged the need for more attacking options in the squad, especially with Anthony Martial facing ongoing injury issues. He mentioned that the club is aware of this and hopes to strengthen the striker position to have more depth and options upfront.
Bruno Fernandes is determined to lead by example and help Manchester United compete at the highest level. He is focused on the team's success and believes that the club deserves to be fighting for trophies in both domestic and European competitions.
