British Esports Federation faces backlash over partnership with Saudi Esports Federation
Posted : 11 October 2023
The British Esports Federation has released a statement addressing criticism of its partnership with the Saudi Esports Federation, although it has not canceled the partnership. This collaboration, announced on October 9th, was deemed 'historic' and involved joint projects like cultural exchange programs, internships, and training initiatives.
However, it faced immediate backlash on social media, with many in the community expressing concerns that it contradicted British Esports' values, particularly on women's and LGBTQ+ rights.
The Saudi Esports Federation, overseen by the Saudi Arabian government, has faced criticism for its stance on LGBTQ+ rights, women's rights, and dissent.
British Esports clarified that the partnership did not involve monetary compensation and emphasized its commitment to inclusivity regardless of gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation. The statement highlighted the importance of engaging in dialogue to promote diversity and inclusivity within esports.
The partnership's impact on British Esports' Women in Esports initiative, which promotes gender and other inclusivity in the industry, drew strong criticism. Many felt that this partnership undermined the initiative's positive efforts. British Esports is affiliated with the Global Esports Federation, which is linked to the Saudi Esports Federation through HRH Prince Faisal Bin Bandar bin Sultan, who serves as Vice President.
Saudi Arabia has made significant investments in esports, acquiring major industry stakeholders and hosting large-scale esports events as part of its economic diversification efforts under Vision 2030. However, some have described these initiatives as 'esportswashing.'
