Brighton monitoring Leicester academy product, Bassey
Posted : 02 June 2023
Leicester City academy graduate Calvin Bassey has emerged as a potential target for a return to England during the upcoming summer transfer window, fueling speculation about his future.
According to respected sports journalist Charlie Parker-Turner, who has contributed to reputable publications such as the Daily Mirror, Daily Express, and the Daily Star, Brighton & Hove Albion are closely monitoring the situation of Ajax Amsterdam's talented defender, Calvin Bassey, with a keen interest in potentially securing his services.
Brighton have identified Bassey as a viable alternative to Levi Colwill, the Chelsea central defender who spent the recently concluded season on loan at the Seagulls.
With aspirations to secure Colwill on a permanent basis for the upcoming season, Brighton's initial bid of £30 million was swiftly rejected by Chelsea, as the two-time European champions firmly stated that the young defender was not available for sale.
Consequently, Brighton now finds themselves actively searching for a suitable replacement, and Bassey appears to fit the bill perfectly.
As a left-footed central defender who is equally adept at playing as a left-back, Bassey possesses the versatility and skills that align with the qualities exhibited by Colwill.
However, the potential transfer is not without its uncertainties. Ajax Amsterdam, Bassey's current club, are currently undergoing a managerial change following their recent parting of ways with John Heitinga.
It remains unclear whether Bassey will remain at Ajax beyond the current season, and it is expected that the appointment of a new head coach will shed more light on his future prospects.
Having joined Ajax from Glasgow Rangers last summer, Bassey made history as the most expensive Nigerian defender to date.
