Osayi Samuel was close to joining Besiktas on a three year deal worth around €1.9 million annually, with a reported €1 million signing bonus. However, the transfer broke down at the final stage after unexpected salary demands were made by his father, who also acts as his representative.
Reports from Turkish and Nigerian media claim that Nelson Osayi, the player’s father, requested an additional €300,000 per season during the final negotiations, causing the club to walk away from the deal.
In a bid to clarify the situation, Osayi Samuel contacted Besiktas officials to explain that he had no prior knowledge of his father’s actions.
“My dad called without telling me and cancelled the transfer. I have no idea what happened. Let’s talk again,” the Fenerbahce fullback was quoted as saying.
Despite his explanation, Besiktas president Serdal Adali confirmed the club had ended discussions, citing “unreasonable last minute requests” from the player’s camp.
Although there were initial suggestions that Besiktas might revisit the deal under previous conditions, the club has since moved on to other targets. The breakdown has reportedly left Osayi Samuel disappointed, especially with his Fenerbahce contract nearing its end.
The 26 year old has attracted interest from several English clubs and could still make a move during the current transfer window.
Bright Osayi Samuel has distanced himself from the failed Besiktas transfer, insisting he was unaware of his father's last minute financial demands. The incident underlines how family involvement can complicate professional football negotiations.
