Brenden Aaronson nears loan move to Union Berlin

Posted : 04 July 2023
According to a source, United States forward Brenden Aaronson is nearing the completion of a loan move to Union Berlin. Aaronson joined Leeds United from FC Salzburg last year in a transfer valued at around $30 million (£23.6m).

However, following Leeds' relegation from the English Premier League this season, he has been seeking a new opportunity. Union Berlin, who finished fourth in the Bundesliga this season and secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League, is his likely destination.

During his sole season in the Premier League, Aaronson featured in 36 out of 38 matches, scoring one goal and providing three assists. His move to Leeds was initially motivated by the chance to reunite with manager Jesse Marsch, an American coach who had previously worked with him at Salzburg. However, Marsch was dismissed from his position in February.

Aaronson made his debut for the US Men's National Team (USMNT) in 2020 and has since become an integral player, particularly during World Cup qualifying matches, where he showcased his versatility in midfield and as a winger. He appeared as a substitute in all four of the United States' World Cup matches, accumulating a total of 108 minutes on the field.

Before his move to Salzburg, the 22-year-old spent two years with the Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer.
