Brazilian court orders ex-Manchester City star Robinho to serve nine-year rape sentence

Posted : 21 March 2024

Former Manchester City and Real Madrid forward Robinho has been ordered by a Brazilian court to serve a nine-year prison sentence for rape. This ruling stems from a conviction handed down by an Italian court in 2017, which found Robinho guilty of participating in the gang rape of a 22-year-old Albanian woman in 2013. Despite residing in Brazil, where extradition of nationals is prohibited, judges in Brasilia have decided that he must serve his sentence following a request from Italy.

The 40-year-old footballer, who holds 100 caps for Brazil, had been playing for AC Milan at the time of the crime. Despite his claims of innocence and assertions that the sexual encounter was consensual, Robinho lost an appeal in 2020, and Italy's highest court upheld his sentence in 2022. Subsequently, Italian prosecutors issued an international arrest warrant for him, leading to the recent decision by the Brazilian court to enforce the sentence.

Robinho's illustrious career included stints with top clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester City, where he achieved significant success. However, his legacy has been tarnished by the conviction and subsequent legal proceedings. Following his time in Europe, he also played for Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande and returned to Brazil to continue his football career with Atletico Mineiro, but now faces the prospect of serving time for the crime he was found guilty of committing.
