Bendel Insurance Goalkeeper Joshua Baba Resurfaces in Lagos After AWOL Declaration

Posted : 11 October 2026

Bendel Insurance goalkeeper Joshua Baba has returned to the club after being declared absent without official leave (AWOL), with the management insisting that disciplinary measures will follow over his prolonged absence.

Baba resurfaced in Lagos on Saturday evening and joined his teammates at their hotel as the Benin Arsenal prepared for Sunday’s Matchday 8 fixture against Sporting Lagos in the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The club confirmed his return in a statement, explaining that the goalkeeper had failed to report back after his approved recovery leave expired.

Baba was last seen shortly after the start of the NPFL season on August 30, when he sustained an injury during Bendel Insurance’s encounter with Warri Wolves in Benin City.

Following the incident, he was granted two weeks to recover and subsequently travelled to Plateau State to visit his family.

He was expected to resume training in mid-September but failed to return as scheduled, prompting the club to declare him AWOL before his eventual appearance in Lagos.

Despite his return, Bendel Insurance management stated that the goalkeeper remained bound by his contractual obligations, with his existing agreement running until the end of 2027.

The club added that it would take appropriate disciplinary and administrative measures in accordance with his contract and the relevant regulations of the NPFL and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The management also thanked media practitioners and other stakeholders who contributed to efforts to address the matter following its earlier announcement about the player’s absence.

Bendel Insurance reiterated its commitment to discipline, professionalism and accountability, stressing that the situation would be handled in line with established contractual and regulatory procedures.
