Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, Real Madrid’s Alexander-Arnold Sidelined with Injuries

Posted : 17 September 2025

Barcelona will be without teenage star Lamine Yamal when they face Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Thursday in their Champions League opener.

The 18-year-old forward, who picked up a groin injury while on international duty with Spain, has been sidelined since missing the weekend LaLiga victory over Valencia.

Manager Hansi Flick expressed frustration with Spain’s handling of the youngster, who has made a strong start to the season with two goals and two assists in domestic competition.

The Catalan club confirmed that full-back Alejandro Balde and midfielder Gavi are also unavailable, in addition to long-term absentee goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.

However, Frenkie de Jong has been declared fit to return. Barcelona will be aiming to improve on last season’s semifinal exit, while Newcastle make their Champions League comeback after missing last year’s tournament.

In Madrid, Real confirmed that Trent Alexander-Arnold sustained a hamstring injury during their 2-1 victory over Marseille on Tuesday. The England international, who joined from Liverpool in the summer, lasted just four minutes before being replaced by Dani Carvajal, who was later sent off.

Medical tests revealed a left-leg hamstring injury, and Spanish media report the right-back could be sidelined for around three weeks.

The timing is a setback for Los Blancos, as both Alexander-Arnold and Carvajal will now miss the upcoming Champions League trip to Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty on September 30. Despite the injury blow, Real still managed to open their campaign with a hard-fought win, showcasing their resilience as record 15-time European champions.
