Barcelona midfielder Gavi faces season-ending blow with anterior cruciate ligament tear

Posted : 20 November 2023
Barcelona faces a significant setback as midfielder Gavi sustains a knee injury during Spain's Euro qualifiers against Georgia. The incident occurred in the 23rd minute, with Gavi injuring his right knee while attempting to control the ball, resulting in tears and visible distress as he left the field.

Initial reports suggest a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament, indicating a potential absence of six to eight months, ruling him out for the rest of the season for Barcelona and raising doubts about his participation in Euro 2024 and the subsequent Olympic tournament in July.

El Mundo reports that Spain's medical staff, after pessimistic initial assessments and tests in the dressing room, confirmed the ligament tear. The 19-year-old midfielder's absence is a significant blow to both Barcelona and the Spanish national team, impacting their prospects in major upcoming tournaments.

Gavi's teammate, Ferran Torres, dedicated his second goal in the match against Georgia to Gavi by waving his shirt after scoring in the 55th minute. Despite the setback, Spain secured a 3-1 victory over Georgia, solidifying their position in the first tier ahead of the Euro 2024 group draw scheduled for December 2.

Gavi's remarkable consistency is highlighted by the fact that he has not missed a single game since his debut with the national team, making 27 appearances, including 23 with the starting lineup. Known for his physical prowess and constant enthusiasm for the game, Gavi's absence poses a challenge for Barcelona and raises uncertainties about Spain's preparations for Euro 2024 and the subsequent Olympic campaign in France, commencing on July 24.
