Barcelona Faces Possible Champions League Ban Over Second Fair Play Breach

Posted : 04 June 2025

Barcelona’s participation in next season’s UEFA Champions League could be in jeopardy due to a second consecutive breach of UEFA’s financial fair play (FFP) regulations, according to a report from The Times in the UK. The club, which had a successful European campaign last season before being eliminated by Inter Milan in the semi-finals, now faces potential disciplinary measures that could extend beyond financial penalties and impact their ability to compete.

The Catalan giants were previously fined €500,000 in 2024 for an initial FFP violation. With a second breach now reported, UEFA is reportedly considering far stricter sanctions. Among the most serious possibilities is a one-season ban from European competitions, which would be a significant setback for a team aiming to re-establish its dominance on the continental stage under new manager Hansi Flick.

In addition to a possible ban, other penalties being weighed include limiting the number of players Barcelona can register for the Champions League squad. Normally, clubs are permitted to register 25 players, but under the proposed sanctions, that number could be reduced. There is also talk of a points deduction at the start of the group stage, which could hinder the team’s chances of progressing to the knockout rounds.

Barcelona’s financial instability has been an ongoing issue, with previous seasons also affected by constraints on player registration due to salary cap limits. Last season, the club could only register Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor midway through the campaign. While English clubs like Chelsea and Aston Villa are also being monitored for initial FFP violations, their potential penalties are expected to be lighter, given this is their first offense.
