On Wednesday, Barcelona took a strong stance against the racist abuse directed at Nigerian player James Nnaji during the Spanish basketball championship final against arch-rivals Real Madrid, adding to the ongoing concern over racism in Spanish sports, highlighted by the recent incidents involving Real's Brazilian football star, Vinicius Jr.
In an official statement, Barcelona expressed their condemnation of the racist insults endured by James Nnaji, a member of their first-team basketball squad, prior to Game 3 of the final.
They called for a decisive response from the Spanish basketball league, ACB, in addressing racial or verbal abuse.
The ACB has reportedly initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the facts surrounding the racist abuse.
Images captured the arrival of the Barcelona team bus at Madrid's WiZink Center, the venue for Tuesday's match, where some Real Madrid fans were seen hurling insults at the Barcelona players.
Local media reports indicate that James Nnaji was specifically targeted with racial slurs.
Following the game, Barcelona coach Sarunas Jasikevicius spoke out about the regrettable incident involving James Nnaji, emphasizing the need to address the issue.
He expressed his disappointment, highlighting that while there has been significant attention on the mistreatment of Vinicius Jr., it is now crucial to address the situation involving Nnaji.
Jasikevicius called for an immediate end to such behavior, stressing that it contradicts the values of Real Madrid and its supporters.
He urged all parties to respond with righteous anger, acknowledging the significance of taking a unified stand against racism in sports.
