Banned Nigerian Sprinter Imaobong Uko Blames AFN for Negligence in Doping Suspension

Posted : 06 July 2025

After a heavy blow to her athletic career from the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of World Athletics, which handed her a two-year doping ban, Nigerian sprinter Imaobong Uko has spoken out, declaring her innocence and placing blame on the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for negligence.

Uko was sanctioned after missing her mandatory doping tests, a violation that typically results in suspension. However, in a statement titled “Exposing the Truth: My Fight Against an Unjust Suspension,” Uko offered a detailed explanation of what she believes went wrong.

"Today, I am sharing my story not just for myself, but for every athlete who has faced injustice in silence," Uko said.

"I am a passionate athlete from Nigeria, and I have been handed a two-year suspension based on a flawed system and a corrupt federation that failed to support me when I needed it most."

Uko claims that she struggled for months with the online whereabouts system, a platform where athletes must regularly update their location for out-of-competition drug testing. Despite reaching out to AFN officials for help, she says she received no meaningful support, only excuses related to network issues and unanswered messages.

"When I was ultimately suspended, I was devastated. During the hearing, I confronted the federation representatives, asking why they didn’t assist me during my technical difficulties. Their response was vague—they claimed I had submitted my information incorrectly, which I strongly deny," she stated.

She also named specific officials, including Mbachi Louis and Onos, whom she accused of ignoring her messages. According to Uko, Assistant Secretary Taldang promised to help but also failed to act when needed most.

"This situation has exposed the corruption and negligence within the federation that is supposed to champion our rights as athletes. I refuse to remain silent while they misuse their power and undermine our careers."

Uko concluded by calling for athletes to stand united, demanding accountability and transparency in sports governance:

"Let’s unite to expose these injustices and fight for a fairer future in sports. Together, we can make a difference."
