Award-winning Nigerian midfielder stars in PSG’s PIF Cup victory

Nigerian midfielder Jennifer Echegini made an impressive debut for Paris Saint-Germain Féminine, scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Manchester City Women in the Perth International Football Cup final. This victory not only marks PSG’s first trophy of the season but also highlights a significant achievement in Echegini’s emerging career.


The match was a test of PSG’s resilience as Manchester City dominated much of the play. Despite the pressure from City, Echegini's composure proved decisive. 

 


The Super Falcons star, who recently represented Nigeria at the Paris Olympics, stepped up to convert a crucial penalty in the 88th minute, securing the win for PSG. The penalty was awarded after Manchester City defender Kerstin Casparij fouled PSG substitute Tara Elimbi Gilbert inside the box.


Echegini demonstrated exceptional calmness as she sent City goalkeeper Khiara Keating the wrong way, securing the win for PSG in front of over 15,000 spectators at HBF Park in Australia.


Although Manchester City created several chances and tested PSG goalkeeper Katarzyna Kiedrzynek throughout the game, it was Echegini's precise finish that ultimately decided the match. Kiedrzynek was instrumental in keeping PSG in the game with a series of impressive saves against players like Chloe Kelly, Jess Park, and Bunny Shaw.


The victory provides a strong start for PSG Féminine as they prepare for their upcoming UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign. Echegini is expected to play a pivotal role as the team looks to build on this success.


Echegini, who previously won the Best Young Player award in Italy while playing for Juventus, scored Nigeria’s only goal at the summer Olympic Games. Meanwhile, Manchester City will need to regroup as they head back to England to continue their preparations for the Women’s Super League season, starting with a key match against Arsenal on September 22.
