AU sports consultant to float football academy in Ebonyi

Posted : 17 July 2023
An African Union Consultant on Sports, Jacob Onu, says that arrangements have been concluded to float a football academy in Ebonyi state, designed to  revive school sports across the state.

Onu made the disclosure on Sunday during the institution of a football competition in honour of Dr Pius Okoh, late Proprietor of Holy Ghost College, Abakaliki.

Onu, a Member of the Presidential Committee on Academicals, said that corporate organisations have identified with the initiative which would harness the potentials of budding football talents.

“This is part of the initiative to revive school sports in the state and make individuals and corporate organisations invest in the sector.

“The Dr P. C Okoh football competition is a pilot scheme of the initiative, to rekindle grassroots-oriented football policy in the state,” he said.

He described the late Okoh as an astute administrator who moulded many youths in combining academics and sports to achieve life ambitions.

The initiator of the Football Competition, Dickson Chukwu, said it will involve privately-owned schools in the state and would be held annually.

It is scheduled to commence in September and the  number of registered schools will determine the number of overall participants.

“It will be staged across three schools in Abakaliki and we would involve public schools in future,” he said.

He described the late Okoh as a mentor who was the first proprietor of a female football club in the old Anambra state.

“We want to use this competition to immortalise the late Okoh as a foremost sports administrator and academician in the state and country,” he said.

Mrs Grace Okoh, wife of the late administrator, said that the event was to immortlise her husband’s immense contribution to education and sports.

“He invested massively in the lives of people educationally and in sports in his lifetime,” she said.
