Atlético Madrid’s Ángel Correa Banned for Five Matches After Referee Abuse

Posted : 12 March 2025

Atlético Madrid striker Ángel Correa has been handed a five-match suspension after receiving a red card and verbally abusing the referee during his team’s 2-1 LaLiga defeat to Getafe. Correa was sent off late in the match for a reckless challenge and proceeded to insult referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernández, leading to additional punishment.

The Spanish football federation’s disciplinary committee rejected Atlético’s argument that Correa’s frustration and high-pressure situation justified his reaction, emphasizing that such behavior towards officials could not be excused.

Following the incident, Correa issued an apology on social media, acknowledging that his actions were out of character. He expressed regret for his reaction, stating that he was deeply frustrated about leaving his team with ten men at a crucial moment.

The Argentine forward reaffirmed his respect for referees and hoped that his apology would be accepted. Despite his remorse, the suspension means Correa will miss key fixtures for Atlético, including the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal against Barcelona.

His absence comes at a critical point in the season, with Atlético currently third in LaLiga, trailing Real Madrid and Barcelona by a single point. In addition to missing the Barcelona cup clash, Correa will be unavailable for league games against Espanyol, Sevilla, and Valladolid. His suspension adds to Atlético’s challenges as they aim to keep pace in the title race and progress in domestic competitions.
