Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa strongly criticised the refereeing decision that saw Eduardo Camavinga sent off during Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich, saying it ultimately “ruined” the match.
Camavinga, introduced as a substitute, received two yellow cards in quick succession in the closing minutes of the second leg, leaving Real Madrid with 10 men for the final stages. At that point, the tie was still level, but Bayern Munich capitalised late on, scoring twice to secure a 4-3 win on the night and a 6-4 aggregate victory. The result booked the German side a semi-final clash with reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The decisive moment came after Camavinga was penalised for delaying the restart following a foul on Harry Kane, resulting in his second booking. Arbeloa expressed disbelief at the decision, arguing that such a dismissal should not have occurred in such a high-stakes knockout match.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Arbeloa described the outcome as deeply frustrating, saying the red card changed the course of a high-quality contest. He added that the emotional impact on his team was significant, as they felt the match had been taken away from them at a crucial moment.
In comments to Movistar, Arbeloa went further, suggesting the referee may not have been fully aware that Camavinga was already on a yellow card. He argued that the dismissal ended what had been an intense and entertaining encounter at its peak.
Players also reacted strongly after the final whistle. Jude Bellingham dismissed the decision as “a joke,” while Antonio Rüdiger chose not to elaborate, saying it was better to remain silent after what unfolded on the pitch.
On the other side, Bayern forward Luis Díaz defended the referee’s decision, stating that Camavinga’s actions prevented a quick restart and an attacking opportunity for the home side.
The defeat adds to a difficult season for Real Madrid, who now face the possibility of finishing without a major trophy for a second consecutive year. Arbeloa’s team currently trail Barcelona by nine points in LaLiga with just seven matches remaining.
