Andy Murray open to Saudi Arabia ATP Tour events despite declining offers

Posted : 01 July 2023
Andy Murray has stated that he is not ruling out the possibility of playing in Saudi Arabia if ATP Tour events are held in the Gulf state, despite previously declining offers to compete there.

The former world number one, aged 36, had previously rejected lucrative exhibition offers in Saudi Arabia. However, he believes the situation becomes "slightly different" if the ATP decides to move official tournaments to the country.

Murray explained that it would be a decision he would have to consider seriously, acknowledging the trend of sports events being hosted in controversial locations.

Last week, ATP Tour chairman Andrea Gaudenzi confirmed discussions with potential investors regarding the organization of events in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has faced criticism for its human rights record, with concerns raised about issues such as women's rights, restrictions on free speech, criminalization of homosexuality, and the use of the death penalty.

Despite some reforms under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, including the lifting of the ban on women driving, campaigners continue to highlight the country's "atrocious" human rights situation.

Initially, Murray reiterated his refusal to play in Saudi Arabia following Gaudenzi's comments.

However, speaking at Wimbledon, the Scottish player indicated that he might reluctantly participate in tournaments there if not doing so would have a negative impact on his career.

He emphasized that his decision would depend on the significance of those tournaments within the tour and rankings, as skipping them could result in penalties.

Murray's stance reflects the complex dilemma faced by athletes when balancing their personal beliefs with the potential implications for their careers and professional opportunities.
