Alexandrova Collapses in Memphis Heat as Teen Liutova Claims Emotional WTA Debut Win

Top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova was forced to retire from her opening-round match at the Memphis Classic after collapsing on court in sweltering conditions, bringing a dramatic end to a marathon contest against 16-year-old Kristina Liutova. Temperatures climbed to around 34°C during the three-hour encounter, with the Russian trailing 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 5-4 when she was unable to continue.

Alexandrova had shown visible signs of physical distress as the deciding set progressed. Play was briefly halted while she attempted to recover, and she was later issued a time violation after taking too long between points. Moments later, she collapsed during a rally, prompting immediate medical assistance from tournament staff.

Although the world No. 19 was able to stand after receiving treatment, she ultimately retired from the match, ending her campaign in Tennessee. The incident overshadowed what should have been a memorable occasion for Liutova, who secured victory in her first-ever WTA Tour main-draw appearance. The teenager was overcome with emotion and left the court in tears following the unsettling scenes.

Elsewhere on the WTA Tour, Venus Williams suffered a first-round exit at the Mubadala DC Open in Washington. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion was beaten 6-3, 6-3 by Austria's Anastasia Potapova, extending her wait for another tour-level singles victory after last winning at the same tournament a year ago.

Despite winning more than three-quarters of her first-serve points, Williams struggled behind her second serve and was unable to put pressure on Potapova's delivery throughout the match. The defeat marked another difficult outing for the 46-year-old as she continues her return to competitive tennis.
