Al-Ittihad sacks Nuno Espirito Santo after string of poor results

Posted : 08 November 2023
Al-Ittihad, the champions of the Saudi Pro League, has parted ways with former Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo due to a series of disappointing results. The team has managed to secure victory in only six out of their 12 league matches this season, with their latest setback being a 2-0 loss to Air Force Club of Iraq in the Asian Champions League.

Nuno, aged 49, assumed the helm at Al-Ittihad in July 2022, following his departure from Tottenham eight months earlier. Hassan Khalifa, the assistant coach, will temporarily lead the team in the wake of Nuno's dismissal.

While Nuno experienced success during his tenure with Wolverhampton Wanderers from 2017 to 2021, his stint at Tottenham was short-lived, as he only lasted four months before being replaced by Antonio Conte. His time at Spurs was marked by a series of losses in the Premier League.

Despite guiding Al-Ittihad to the Saudi title in the previous season, there were reports of a strained relationship between Nuno and former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, who joined the club in June as part of the influx of star players into the league.

Al-Ittihad officially announced Nuno Santo's departure in a statement, citing a comprehensive technical evaluation of his coaching during his tenure. The team, which currently ranks sixth in the Saudi Pro League, is scheduled to face Abha in their upcoming match on Friday and counts former Liverpool midfielder Fabinho and ex-Chelsea and Leicester player N'Golo Kante among its squad.
