AFN rule may disqualify Brume, Ofili out of World Athletics Championship

Nigeria may miss the participation of ace runner, Godson Brume and Favour Ofili at 2023 World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary, after their non-participation in the just-concluded National Trials in Benin.
The Team Nigeria might likely miss the services of the key athletes except Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) decides to go against its own rule to bend it for them.
According to AFN, the duo of Godson Brume and Favour Ofili have been ruled off the championship due to their withdrawal from the National Trials in Benin.
The federation a few days ago announced that any athlete that failed to participate in the trial will not be selected.
Brume was said to have missed the flight four times, an excuse the federation believed is not tenable.
“We are very strict about it,” the official said. “This is not the first time Godson Brume is doing this.
How can he miss his flight four times? We were told his school keeps paying money to renew the flight, yet he missed the opportunity. That shows his level of unseriousness.
“It was the same attitude during the Commonwealth Games.
"We will hold a meeting later, but I am afraid he is out of our team to the World Championships."
In 2022, a 19-year-old Godson Brume gained admission as a student-athlete scholarship to study at the Louisiana State University (LSU), but things didn't go in his favour in his Freshman year, being plagued with injuries and only managing to reduce his personal best by 0.01s, from 10.13s to 10.12s.
He started the 2023 season with a bang, breaking his 60m personal best in almost every meet, eventually ending the indoor season with a lifetime best of 6.60s from 6.89s in 2021 and a bronze medal at the SEC Indoor Championships.
