Abu Farchi Sent Off After Controversial Celebration in Israel’s Loss to Austria

Israel forward Saied Abu Farchi was sent off during his side’s 3-1 UEFA Nations League defeat to Austria after a controversial celebration following his equalising goal.

Abu Farchi headed Israel level in the 55th minute at the Raiffeisen Arena in Linz, cancelling out Romano Schmid’s first-half penalty. The 20-year-old then ran towards the corner, removed the flag and used the pole as part of a gesture that appeared to resemble firing a gun. Reuters also reported that Israeli media described the celebration as being inspired by snooker.

The referee had booked Abu Farchi just four minutes earlier. He was shown a second yellow card for the celebration and consequently sent off, leaving Israel with 10 players for the remainder of the match.

Austria took advantage of the numerical advantage late in the game. Phillipp Mwene restored the hosts’ lead in the 90th minute before Saša Kalajdžić added a third goal in stoppage time to complete a 3-1 victory.

The result gave Austria three points from the opening Nations League fixture, while Abu Farchi’s dismissal became one of the match’s main talking points. The Colorado Rapids forward is now set to miss Israel’s next Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland through suspension, with any further disciplinary action yet to be determined.
