Nigeria has kicked off its campaign at the 4th Africa Youth Games in Luanda, Angola, on a bright and promising note, securing early victories and qualification spots in multiple events.
The momentum around Team Nigeria was further energized by the arrival of the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, who touched down in Luanda to inspire and motivate the athletes as they pursue continental success.
Day One action highlighted Nigeria’s strength in table tennis. In the boys’ singles, the team defeated Ethiopia 3–0, securing a place in the Round of 32. The girls’ singles team also delivered an impressive performance, finishing at the top of Group 4 and advancing to the Round of 32 ahead of competitors from Madagascar and Ghana.
Looking ahead to Day Two, attention shifts to the badminton team event, where Nigeria is set to compete in the semifinals. With a strong start and a clear path to the final, expectations are high that Team Nigeria will continue to build on its early success and make a significant impact at the Games.
Speaking shortly after his arrival, Hon. Olopade reiterated the NSC’s commitment to nurturing the future of Nigerian sports. He emphasized that the Commission is focused on developing a sustainable talent pipeline capable of producing world-class athletes who can represent Nigeria at elite levels for years to come.
