2nd Cycling Lagos to focus on environmental protection – Organisers
Posted : 01 August 2023
The organisers of the 2nd Cycling Lagos on Monday said that the competition would focus more on the positive impacts of the sport such as encouraging a greener and safer environment.
The organisers made this known at a press briefing held in Lagos to herald the 2nd Cycling Lagos scheduled for October 21.
The convener of the Cycling Lagos, Bamidele Adeleye said that the theme of the 2nd Cycling Lagos was `Greener Ride’.
Adeleye said that the competition was fashioned after a beneficial project to protect humanity from environmental pollution, occasioned by the use of fossil fuels as means of transportation.
“The competition is focusing on climate change and how we can help our environment; that is the reason we have carefully chosen the theme of the 2023 edition as `Greener Ride’.
“We have purposed to encourage more Nigerians to imbibe the habit of riding bicycles for its benefits to the economy, environment and health, among others.
“There is economic benefit because it saves money spent on transportation, health benefit because it increases man’s metabolism and environmental benefit because it reduces carbon emission which causes climate change.
“Riding bicycles has many advantages to man that we can ever recall, so in this stead, we are calling on every Nigerian interested to register online for this race.”
Adeleye said that the 2nd Cycling Lagos had been segmented to accommodate all categories of people that would want to participate.
“We have different segments for all classes of Nigerians that are interested in the competition, we have celebrity race, children race, professional race among others.
“We have spaces for everyone; all they need to do is to have a bicycle and helmet, and to register. On our part, we will provide jerseys for all participants,” he said.
The Secretary of the Lagos State Cycling Association (LSCA), Olawaye Ige, said that the body technically chose the topic to contribute meaningfully to environmental protection.
“We need to protect the environment by providing safe and healthy air for all to breathe. We all know the impact of climate change, not to the air alone but also on the weather conditions.
“We can also see the effect of fuel subsidy removal on transportation which the habit of cycling can help to mitigate. This programme is practically for everyone.”
Ige explained that the event had five different categories for the 2nd Cycling Lagos.
“The categories include children’s ride for those within eight years to 15 years, veterans for the older ones and corporate ride for those that are professionals.
“There is also the professional ride for active sports men and women and finally, the celebrity ride.
“There are prizes for all categories mentioned, but our focus is not on the prizes but the immense benefits of riding bicycles. The professional riders will be the highest earners,” he said.
