It was a shocking revelation at the final three nominations for the 2024 CAF Awards as Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali failed to make the cut for the Best Goalkeeper Award.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) revealed the final three shortlist on Thursday ahead of the award ceremony on Monday.
However, Super Falcons goalkeeper and the defending winner in the women's category, Chiamaka Nnadozie, made the final three shortlist for the CAF Best Keeper Award.
Nnadozie, who plays for Paris FC in France, is competing for the title of best goalkeeper on the continent against South Africa’s Andile Dlamini of Mamelodi Sundowns and Morocco’s Khadija Er-Rmichi of AS FAR.
The Nigerian goalkeeper hopes to retain the award she won last year, which would solidify her place as the continent’s best shot-stopper.
It was a mixed bag of emotions as Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who had been part of the final five shortlist for the Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year award, missed out on the final three.
The final three contenders for the men’s award include Manchester United’s André Onana (Cameroon), South Africa’s Ronwen Williams, and Ivory Coast’s Yoan Fofana.
Nwabali was instrumental in Nigeria’s qualification for the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where they finished second.
