2023 Concacaf Gold Cup group stage begins with Group D matches

Posted : 26 June 2023
On Tuesday, the group stage of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup continues with the commencement of matches in Group D. Canada, aiming for their second Gold Cup title, will kick off their campaign, while Cuba and Guatemala will both seek a victorious start.

Group D action begins at BMO Field in Toronto, where Canada faces Guadeloupe. Canada secured their place in the tournament by finishing at the top of their Concacaf Nations League group and reaching the CNL Finals, where they were runners-up after a 2-0 defeat to the United States.

Guadeloupe, on the other hand, advanced through the qualification route, successfully navigating the first and second rounds of the Prelims without conceding a goal. Les Gwada Boys achieved a 5-0 victory over Antigua and Barbuda and a 2-0 win against Guyana, earning them a spot in the group stage for the fifth time in their history.

Canada will rely on the leadership of players who were part of the CNL Finals run, such as goalkeeper Milan Borjan, midfielder Stephen Eustaquio, and forward Lucas Cavallini, all of whom have been called up by Head Coach John Herdman. Meanwhile, forward Charles-Andreas Brym and defender Zac McGraw are among the players looking to make their mark in the tournament.

Guadeloupe's manager, Jocelyn Angloma, who played a key role in their historic journey to the Gold Cup semifinals in 2007, will depend on the experience of defender Meddy Lina. Additionally, he hopes for strong performances from Prelims standouts, defender Andreaw Gravillon and forward Luther Archimede.

The teams have an even record in their previous encounters, with Guadeloupe securing a 2-1 victory over Canada at the Orange Bowl in Miami during their impressive 2007 run. However, Canada had the upper hand four years later in Florida, with Dwayne De Rosario's goal leading them to a 1-0 win at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
