Zion Suzuki Backs Japan to Win Asian Cup After Admitting Past Errors

Posted : 05 October 2026

Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki believes Japan have what it takes to win the 2027 Asian Cup, while accepting responsibility for his costly mistakes in their quarter-final exit two years ago.

Suzuki struggled during Japan’s 2024 Asian Cup campaign in Qatar, where they were eliminated by Iran in the last eight. The 24-year-old says his experience since then, including playing at the 2026 World Cup and moving to the Premier League, has strengthened his confidence and improved him as a goalkeeper.

The Japan international has quickly established himself at Aston Villa after joining from Parma in the summer, taking over following Emiliano Martinez’s departure.

Suzuki has also impressed during Japan’s recent international fixtures, helping them beat Uruguay, Venezuela, Ecuador and New Zealand.

Suzuki was named Villa’s player of the month for September and says he is increasingly comfortable under manager Unai Emery. He admits the Premier League’s greater pace and intensity have presented a challenge but believes regular matches are helping him continue to develop.

Japan will enter the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia aiming to end a 16-year wait for the continental crown. The Samurai Blue have been drawn alongside defending champions Qatar, Thailand and Indonesia in Group F, with the tournament scheduled for January 7 to February 5, 2027.
