Zimbabwe Name Strong Squad for Unity Cup Clash Against Nigeria as Munetsi Returns

Posted : 12 May 2026

Zimbabwe national team head coach Kaitano Tembo has officially announced a formidable 26-man squad for the upcoming 2026 Unity Cup in London. The Warriors are scheduled to face the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the tournament's first semi-final on May 26. The match will take place at The Valley, the home ground of Charlton Athletic. This selection marks a significant shift in direction for the team under Tembo’s leadership.

The headline of the squad list is the return of star midfielder Marshall Munetsi. The Paris FC player was controversially omitted from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations squad under former coach Marian Marinica. His recall is seen as a move to bolster the team's experience and leadership. Munetsi is expected to lead the midfield alongside Sheffield Wednesday's Marvelous Nakamba. Udinese defender Jordan Zemura also makes his return after missing previous international assignments.

Tembo has prioritized foreign-based talent for this invitational tournament. Only two domestic players made the list: goalkeeper Future Sibanda and midfielder Mongameli Tshuma. The rest of the squad features players from leagues in England, France, Italy, and South Africa. Notable inclusions include Tino Kadewere from Aris Thessaloniki and Barnsley’s Tawanda Chirewa. This overseas-heavy roster highlights Zimbabwe's intent to challenge the defending champions, Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle is expected to release his squad list later this week. Sources indicate that Chelle will likely rest several key starters like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. Instead, the Nigerian team may feature breakout stars from the domestic league and the English Championship. Players like Prosper Obah and Ryan Alebiosu are among those rumored to be under consideration.

Nigeria enters the competition as the reigning champions of the Unity Cup. The tournament also features India and Jamaica, who will compete in the second semi-final. If Nigeria defeats Zimbabwe on May 26, they will advance to the final scheduled for May 30. Both teams are using this competition to prepare for the resumption of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
