Zico Backs Carlo Ancelotti as Brazil’s Best Hope to Win 2026 World Cup

Posted : 30 May 2025

Carlo Ancelotti’s reputation for maximizing the potential of Brazilian players makes him an excellent choice to lead the national team back to glory, according to football legend Zico. As the first foreign coach to manage Brazil in six decades, the Italian tactician has pledged to restore the five-time World Cup champions to their former dominance.

Ancelotti’s success with players like Vinicius Junior at Real Madrid, where he helped transform the young talent into one of La Liga’s brightest stars, highlights his ability to nurture Brazilian footballers at the highest level.

Zico, a revered figure in Brazilian football history, praised Ancelotti’s deep understanding and admiration for Brazilian players, emphasizing that the coach’s style aligns well with Brazilian football philosophy.

Speaking from Japan, where he serves as an adviser to Kashima Antlers, Zico noted that Ancelotti has consistently valued Brazilian talent and positioned them to succeed in various top European clubs. This experience, combined with his love for the game and tactical expertise, positions Ancelotti to help Brazil thrive on the international stage.

At 65, Ancelotti boasts an impressive coaching résumé, including five Champions League titles and leadership roles at some of Europe’s elite clubs such as AC Milan, Juventus, Real Madrid, Chelsea, PSG, and Bayern Munich.

Although this is his first role managing a national team, he steps into Brazil’s top job during a challenging period. Zico pointed out that Brazilian coaches have become less prominent globally, with fewer managing abroad, which partly explains the Brazilian Football Confederation’s decision to appoint a foreign coach.

Currently fourth in South America’s World Cup qualifying standings, Brazil faces a difficult road ahead with crucial matches against Ecuador and Bolivia. Ancelotti is the fourth coach since Tite’s departure after Brazil’s 2022 World Cup quarterfinal exit.

Despite these challenges, Zico believes Brazil remains a strong contender for the 2026 World Cup if Ancelotti can effectively guide the team in the short time before the tournament. He emphasized that no team stands out as a clear favorite, leaving the door open for Brazil to reclaim their place among the elite.
