Zaidu Sanusi Sidelined for FC Porto’s Decisive Portuguese Cup Clash Against Sporting CP

FC Porto head coach Francesco Farioli has confirmed that Nigerian defender Zaidu Sanusi is unavailable for tonight's Portuguese Cup semifinal. The Dragons host Sporting CP at the Estádio do Dragão on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. This second-leg fixture is a critical moment for Porto as they attempt to reach another domestic final.

Sanusi missed the team's final training session on Tuesday morning. He is currently recovering from an injury sustained during Porto’s recent league victory over Tondela. During that match, the 28-year-old was forced off in the 62nd minute and replaced by Thiago Silva. Farioli addressed the media during his pre-match press conference to provide a fitness update on his squad.

The manager noted that while some players are returning, the Nigerian international remains out of contention. "Martim Fernandes will return to the team," Farioli told the club's official website. "Zaidu will remain out as he is still recovering." This absence forces the Italian coach to adjust his defensive line for one of the biggest games of the season.

Porto enters this match trailing 1-0 on aggregate. Sporting CP won the first leg in early March thanks to a second-half penalty from Luis Suárez. The Dragons must now overturn this narrow deficit to secure a place in the final on May 24. They will face either second-tier Torreense or third-division Fafe in the championship match.

Despite missing Sanusi, Porto remains in strong form domestically. They currently lead the Primeira Liga standings by seven points over rivals Benfica. Sanusi has been a reliable performer this term, contributing one goal and two assists in 25 appearances. His pace and defensive recovery have been vital during Porto's pursuit of a domestic double.

The match at the Dragão is expected to be a tactical battle between two of Portugal's giants. Sporting is looking to defend their narrow lead to reach their 32nd tournament final. Meanwhile, Farioli’s men are aiming for their 35th final appearance in the competition's history. Fans expect a high-intensity encounter as both sides prioritize winning the Taça de Portugal trophy.
