Yobe Desert Stars Boss Eyes Promotion After Comeback Win Over Doma FC

Posted : 07 July 2025

After a spirited 2-1 comeback victory over Doma FC in Matchday 2 of the ongoing Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 playoffs, Yobe Desert Stars Technical Adviser, Ernest Jupiter, expressed confidence that his team is now in a strong position to battle for promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Doma FC took the early lead, finding the back of the net within the opening minutes of the game. Yobe Desert Stars responded before the break, leveling the score 1-1 by halftime.

In a tense second half, both teams pushed forward, launching several attacking moves into each other’s territory. However, the decisive moment came with just five minutes left on the clock. Yobe were awarded a free kick, and John Zauka rose to head home the winner, sealing all three points for the Desert Stars.

Speaking after the match, Coach Jupiter revealed that the victory was the result of a carefully crafted strategy following their goalless draw against Barau FC on Matchday 1.

“I’m highly excited with this victory which gave us the maximum points,” Jupiter said. “You’re aware that all the teams in our group played out goalless draws on Matchday 1, and as such, this win has given us real hope of getting closer to securing an NPFL ticket.”

Looking ahead to their final group fixture against Wikki Tourists, Jupiter acknowledged the challenge but insisted his team would aim for another win to solidify their promotion chances.

With the victory, Yobe Desert Stars now sit on four points, having drawn one and won one, placing them in a favorable position as the group stage nears its conclusion.

Despite the setback, Doma FC Technical Adviser, Coach Akin Onigbinde, remains optimistic about his team’s chances of securing a spot in the NPFL next season.

Reflecting on their earlier match against Wikki Tourists, Onigbinde admitted his players missed several key chances but emphasized that the experience had been an eye-opener for the squad.

“We’ve learned from our mistakes, and the first match has opened our eyes to reality,” he said. “We’ve worked hard on our goal-scoring ability, and we’re determined to make a strong comeback.”

Onigbinde also commended the Nigeria National League leadership for their excellent tournament organization and praised the officiating.

“The match officials have done justice to the game, and we appreciate their efforts,” he noted.

As they prepare for their next match, Onigbinde stressed its significance, saying, “Tomorrow’s match will determine our fate, and we’re battle-ready to give our best and secure a spot in the Apex League next season.”
