Nigerian referee Yemisi Eunice Akintoye has been selected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to officiate at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26.
Akintoye, a member of the Lagos State Football Referees Council, earned her place at the tournament following her successful performance at the WAFCON preparatory course held earlier this month in Cairo, Egypt. She was badged as a FIFA referee in 2021 and has previously officiated in the WAFU Women’s Champions League, WAFU B U-20 Championship, and the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Her selection is a significant achievement, as she is the only Nigerian referee among the 18 officials appointed for the tournament. A total of 46 officials, including referees, assistant referees, and video match officials (VMOs), have been selected to officiate at the competition.
The 2025 WAFCON will feature the top women’s national teams from across Africa, with the Banyana Banyana of South Africa defending their title. Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been drawn in Group B alongside Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria.
Akintoye’s appointment underscores Nigeria’s growing influence in the development of elite female referees on the continent. Her participation in WAFCON 2025 is expected to inspire other Nigerian officials and contribute to the elevation of officiating standards in African women’s football.
