Xavi Says Netherlands Deserved More After Late Draw With Germany

Xavi believes the Netherlands did enough to beat Germany after Cody Gakpo’s stoppage-time equaliser rescued a 1-1 draw in the UEFA Nations League.

The match at the Johan Cruyff Arena marked the first game in charge for both Xavi and Jürgen Klopp. Germany took the lead in the 32nd minute when Felix Nmecha finished from close range, but Gakpo produced a superb volley in the 92nd minute to earn the hosts a point.

Xavi was particularly pleased with the Netherlands’ response after the interval. The former Barcelona coach said his team showed greater ambition and intensity in the second half and believes that performance provides the standard his players should follow in their upcoming matches.

The Dutch also had two goals ruled out during the contest. Virgil van Dijk’s first-half header was disallowed following a foul by Brian Brobbey on Germany goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, while substitute Mexx Meerdink later saw an effort chalked off after another crowded incident in the German penalty area.

Xavi acknowledged that his players still have areas to improve, particularly in their work in duels, second balls and defensive situations. However, he said he was encouraged by the character shown by the team, including the substitutes who made their international debuts.

The Netherlands also suffered an injury setback, with Brobbey forced off during the first half. Xavi indicated that the striker would miss the remaining three Nations League matches during the international window, meaning a replacement will need to be called up.

Germany also had injury concerns of their own. Jamal Musiala was ruled out before kickoff because of a thigh issue, while Kai Havertz left the field during the first half. Both players were due to undergo further assessment.

Xavi also expressed his appreciation for the reception from the Dutch supporters during his first match as national-team coach. The draw leaves both sides with a point from the opening Group A2 fixture, with the Netherlands next travelling to face Serbia on Sunday.
