Xabi Alonso remained tight-lipped about his future as Bayer Leverkusen's head coach when asked about rumors linking him to the Real Madrid job. The Spanish media have speculated that Alonso is a top contender to replace Carlo Ancelotti at the helm of the La Liga club, should Ancelotti leave after a disappointing season.
Alonso, who previously played under Ancelotti at Real Madrid, responded to the speculation by saying there was nothing new to report, maintaining that the situation remained unchanged.
Alonso's tenure at Leverkusen has been marked by notable success, particularly last season when he led the team to an unbeaten Bundesliga campaign, securing their first-ever league title, the German Cup, and a spot in the Europa League final.
Although the current season has not been as dominant, with Bayern Munich poised to clinch the title, Alonso expressed hope that Leverkusen could finish strongly. He acknowledged that the team's current performance still ranked as the second-best in the club's history.
Looking ahead to Sunday's match against Freiburg, Alonso is preparing for a tough contest. Freiburg, currently fourth in the standings and vying for Champions League qualification, will be highly motivated to win.
Alonso also mentioned the possibility of being without Nigerian forward Victor Boniface, who has scored 11 goals this season, due to a thigh injury. Despite these challenges, Alonso is confident that Leverkusen will be equally determined as they fight for European spots in the remaining matches.
