Xabi Alonso Calls for Winning Mentality in First Chelsea Press Conference

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has challenged his players to develop a stronger hunger for success as he begins a new chapter at Stamford Bridge. Speaking at his first press conference since taking charge, the Spaniard stressed that building a winning mentality and a clear team identity will be central to his plans for the club.

Alonso, 44, stopped short of setting specific targets for his debut season but made it clear that securing qualification for European competition is one of Chelsea's key objectives. He explained that achieving that goal will depend on creating a consistent style of play, improving performances, and ensuring every player embraces the club's ambition.

"We want to be there," Alonso said when asked about returning to European football. He added that success would only come through hard work, a shared vision, and a commitment to improving every aspect of the team's performances throughout the campaign.

The former Spain international acknowledged that Chelsea are still in the early stages of pre-season preparations, with several players unavailable due to international commitments and transfer activity continuing behind the scenes. Nevertheless, he expressed confidence that the squad possesses the quality needed to compete at the highest level once everyone is available.

Alonso also reflected on the ongoing FIFA World Cup, recalling his own experience of helping Spain lift the trophy in South Africa in 2010. He said major tournaments offer valuable lessons in resilience, teamwork and maintaining high standards under pressure—qualities he hopes to instil in his Chelsea squad.

The former midfielder emphasised that Chelsea's ambitions must be matched by passion and determination on the pitch. He believes the club's players, staff and supporters must share the same drive if the Blues are to challenge consistently in one of the world's most competitive leagues.
