Xabi Alonso Backs Morgan Rogers to Transform Chelsea Attack After Record Transfer

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has praised the club's record-breaking signing of Morgan Rogers, describing the England international as the ideal addition to improve the team's attacking options ahead of the new season.

Speaking before his first game in charge—a pre-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday—Alonso said he was thrilled to welcome the 23-year-old midfielder to Stamford Bridge. Rogers completed his move from Aston Villa last week for a British-record transfer fee of £117 million ($157 million).

Alonso believes Chelsea secured one of the best available players for a position they were eager to strengthen. He said the club's latest acquisition reflects their ambition to become more competitive after finishing 10th in the Premier League last season and missing out on European qualification.

The Spanish coach is confident Rogers can quickly build an effective partnership with fellow England international Cole Palmer. The two players share a close friendship off the pitch, while their creativity and technical ability could provide Chelsea with a new attacking dimension.

Alonso revealed he already has a tactical plan to integrate Rogers into a squad that also features Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian and summer signing Geovany Quenda. He stressed that balancing creative freedom with tactical discipline will be key to unlocking the team's full potential.

According to Alonso, Chelsea's success will depend on developing strong relationships between their attacking players, allowing them to combine naturally while maintaining the structure needed to compete both in possession and without the ball.

The manager also highlighted Rogers' versatility as one of his greatest strengths. Although capable of operating across several attacking roles, Alonso suggested the midfielder is most effective when playing in central areas or drifting in from the left, where he can influence the game and connect with teammates.

Rogers will not join Chelsea's pre-season tour of Australia after representing England at the World Cup, where the national team finished third. However, Alonso expects the midfielder to become an important part of his plans once he links up with the squad.

Chelsea reportedly pursued Rogers for two years before finally completing the transfer, beating Arsenal to his signature after Aston Villa's valuation proved too high for the Premier League champions. The move also surpassed the previous British transfer record, set earlier this month when Manchester City signed Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million.

Chelsea continue their pre-season schedule with a London derby against Tottenham Hotspur in Sydney on Saturday before travelling to Hong Kong to face Juventus on August 5.
