Wrexham Young POTY hails Okonkwo as league’s best goalkeeper

Posted : 15 May 2025

Wrexham’s standout young player, Max Cleworth, has expressed high admiration for his teammate Arthur Okonkwo, praising him as the top goalkeeper in League One. Cleworth highlighted Okonkwo’s crucial role in the team’s recent success and consistent performances throughout the season.

During the 2024–25 campaign, Okonkwo was vital in Wrexham’s climb up the English football ladder, keeping an impressive 19 clean sheets in League Two. His goalkeeping excellence was key to the Red Dragons securing second place and earning promotion.

After a fruitful loan spell, the 23-year-old former Arsenal academy player completed a permanent transfer to Wrexham in summer 2024, ending a long association with Arsenal that spanned 15 years. The previous season, he was instrumental in the club’s promotion campaign with 16 clean sheets in 40 matches.

In the current League One season, Okonkwo’s performances remained outstanding. Although Birmingham City’s Ryan Allsop recorded slightly more clean sheets, Okonkwo maintained a better ratio of shutouts compared to his rival, showing his reliability between the posts.

Cleworth, speaking to Wrexham Insider, didn’t hold back in his praise, describing Okonkwo as “unbelievable” and “the best keeper in the league.” He acknowledged the countless times Okonkwo saved the team and emphasized the strong bond they share both on and off the field.

Born in London, Okonkwo has represented England at youth levels but has attracted interest from the Nigeria Football Federation. Nigeria is reportedly keeping an eye on his progress as they consider players eligible through dual nationality for future call-ups.

Overall, Okonkwo’s performances and attitude have made him a fan favorite and a key figure for Wrexham as they continue their rise through the English football tiers.
