World Cup Results Threaten Super Eagles Position in Global FIFA Rankings As Rivals Rise

Posted : 23 June 2026

The Super Eagles of Nigeria face a potential decline in the global rankings due to ongoing results at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nigeria failed to qualify for the tournament hosted across North America; yet their initial position improved from 26th to 24th in the live global table. This brief upward movement occurred after several higher-ranked nations suffered unexpected point deductions during the group stages.

Heavyweights like Portugal, Belgium, Senegal, Algeria, and Ecuador dropped valuable ranking points during their respective opening tournament fixtures. However; this positive structural shift for the West African giants is now heavily threatened by surging lower-ranked competitors. Multiple participating nations are quickly accumulating significant points through memorable tournament victories.

Australia has climbed to 25th in the live rankings after opening their campaign with a two-goal victory over Turkey. Despite a subsequent loss to the United States; the Socceroos remain firmly in contention for the knockout phase. Another positive result in their final group match could see them mathematically surpass the inactive Nigerian squad.

Egypt has also emerged as a significant threat to the Super Eagles after securing historic milestones in the tournament. Led by captain Mohamed Salah; the Pharaohs climbed to 26th globally following a draw with Belgium and a historic victory over New Zealand. The North Africans currently lead Group G and will likely overtake Nigeria with a positive result against Iran.

Norway and co-hosts Canada are equally applying heavy pressure from the lower ranks of the global standings. The Scandinavian team climbed to 27th following consecutive victories over Iraq and Senegal; with Erling Haaland spearheading their attack. Meanwhile; Canada occupies 28th place after a dominant six-goal victory over Qatar helped by a Jonathan David hat-trick.

The continuous success of these active tournament participants threatens to eradicate Nigeria's current ranking advantage. If these chasing nations sustain their impressive momentum into the round of 32; the Super Eagles will likely drop down the global ladder. The Nigerian football hierarchy will be forced to watch from the sidelines as their international status diminishes.
