World Cup 2026 Round-Up: Goals Flow, Records Fall and Underdogs Impress in Opening Games

Posted : 18 June 2026

The first set of group-stage matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has already delivered a rich mix of drama, debate, and standout performances, setting the stage for a highly competitive tournament. From surprise results and tactical battles to record-breaking feats and emotional milestones, the opening round has given fans plenty to analyse across the globe.

African teams entered the tournament with a record 10 representatives but endured a mixed start overall. Only Ghana managed to secure a victory in their opening fixture, yet several other nations earned widespread respect despite unfavourable results.

Cape Verde impressed with a disciplined display against Spain, the Democratic Republic of Congo matched Portugal for large portions of their match, and Morocco showcased their quality against Brazil, proving that African sides can compete at the highest level despite limited wins.

The three host nations—USA, Mexico, and Canada—also made positive early impressions by avoiding defeat in their opening matches. Mexico opened the tournament with a win over South Africa, though the performance sparked tactical debate among supporters.

The United States produced the most dominant display, defeating Paraguay 4-1 with an energetic attacking performance, while Canada held Bosnia and Herzegovina to a draw in a solid but unspectacular outing.

Statistically, the tournament has begun at a rapid pace. Across 24 matches, 75 goals have already been scored, averaging more than three per game. Discipline has largely been controlled, with only two red cards shown so far, both in South Africa’s match against Mexico.

However, the competition has seen an unusually high number of own goals, already surpassing the total recorded at the 2022 World Cup.

Lionel Messi currently leads the Golden Boot race after a brilliant hat-trick against Algeria, which also took him level with Miroslav Klose on 14 World Cup goals.

However, Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, and Erling Haaland remain firmly in contention after strong starts of their own, keeping the race wide open.

Several matches have already been highlighted as early classics. England’s six-goal thriller against Croatia, Japan’s dramatic comeback draw with the Netherlands, and Germany’s emphatic 7-1 win over Curaçao have stood out, while Cape Verde’s defensive resilience against Spain has also drawn praise.

The expanded tournament has also produced historic firsts. Curaçao became the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup and celebrated their first-ever goal on the global stage.

DR Congo and Uzbekistan also recorded landmark goals through Yoane Wissa and Abbosbek Fayzullaev respectively, each marking significant moments in their national football histories despite defeats.

With the opening round complete, attention now turns to the second phase of group fixtures as the race for knockout qualification intensifies, beginning with South Africa’s clash against Czechia. Fans can expect the drama, goals, and surprises to continue as the tournament builds momentum.
